Wow! What a fantastic day :) Highlights of the trip according to the children were:
- the cabin as we got to experience what it would have been like for the early immigrants - sharing small bunks; a bucket for a toilet (and for spewing in); no privacy; putting up with snorers; and doing all this for 6 months!
- the Peter Blake exhibition - what an inspirational NZer with his lucky red socks. Also the grinding/steering a yacht team game. Move over Team NZ, room 7 is here to take over!
Thanks to the parents who helped out today. Sleep well everyone!
We are a stunning group of year 6 learners. We hope you enjoy browsing our blog as much as we enjoy posting our work!

Learning to use SRA
We are going to be using the SRA programme to help us improve our reading skills. First we are working together to learn how to work through the process. Then we get to work through the process by ourselves. Mrs Milne remembers doing SRA when she was at school. Funny!

Using protractors
Today in Room 7 some of our protractor experts taught others how to use a protractor to measure the angles of 2-d shapes. They taught us to always look at an angle first to see if it is acute (less than 90 degrees) or obtuse. This is important so we read the right numbers on the protractor.

Room 7's Olympic News
Hello, everyone. Today we are talking about the Olympics! When the Olympic starts (which is in less than one day) most of us will be watching it on television, unless you’re lucky enough to be in London, watching it live! But did you know that the Berlin Olympics (held in 1936) were the first Olympic games to ever be broadcast on television?
Did you know that no married women were allowed to watch the Ancient Olympics? That is because all the male athletes were expected to participate naked. But ‘certain bits’ could be covered up by a leather string.
Have you ever been to the Olympics? Well, if you have you should consider yourself lucky because only 9.6 million tickets are for sale (8 million for the Olympics and 1.6 million for the Para-olympics). You may say that’s a lot but actually there are millions and millions and MILLIONS of people in the world. So to be able to watch it live you should be grateful.
Have you ever seen the Olympic torch? If you have then, have you ever wondered what it represents? The sacred Olympic Torch represents the three Olympic values:
Respect, Excellence and Friendship.
It also stands for the three Olympic Words:
Faster, Higher, Stronger.
The five Olympic rings represent the five major regions of the world:
Asia, America, Europe, Africa and Oceania.
Every national flag in the world includes at least one of the six colours (which include yellow, blue, green, black, red and white) in their flag.
See you next time at Room 7, Pinehill School News.

Another Olympic update by our fabulous Room 7 reporters
Hello there! Welcome to Room 7 news. Here you will find some amazing Olympic Facts.
In 1916, 1940, and in 1944, the Olympic Games were cancelled due to World War 1 and World War 2.
Another awesome fact is that women were allowed to participate in the Olympics at the 1900 Games.
Did you know? Olympic gold medals haven’t been real gold since the 1912. They were silver with gold plating.
Surprising, right?
What’s more, today’s athletes follow a strict rule of following a nutritional plan and they carefully watch what they eat. Before the Olympics in ancient Greece, athletes mostly ate cheese. (Apparently cheese is one of our reporter’s favourite foods. Who is drooling right now?
You can guess who it is, right?) Well anyway, that’s it for now! Be ready to come back to our spectacular blog to read the latest information about the 2012 London Olympics.

Hello everyone. It is only 2 days before the grand opening of the 2012 London Olympics. The atmosphere here in London is amazing!
This is the third time London has hosted the Olympics. The first was in 1908 and the second time was in 1948. And now it is 2012!
Just for your information, there are 35 sports in this Olympics, with 400 different events. That’s an extraordinary amount of sports watching!
The opening ceremony is top secret and under wraps but we do know that people had to audition for a role in this spectacular opening show.
The two mascots for the London Olympics are Wenlock and Mandeville. They are in for a busy time.
Tune in later for another Olympic update from Room 7, Pinehill School.

Cluster football
Some people tried out for the cluster football teams. There is an A-team and a B-team and also a girls’ team. The people that made the 3 teams are going to Pinehurst tomorrow to compete in the big football competition. We hope that the weather will be sunny and dry this time!

Fact wall
In reading time we have been reading about different animals. Some groups have started to make our fact wall. When we have enough facts it should be complete. The fact wall looks like a brick wall but its colourful. The facts we have at the moment are facts about the giant squid, the colossal squid and tigers.

Animal Reports
In Room 7 we are doing information reports about an animal that we are interested in.
Our homework was to collect data about our chosen animal and bring it to school. We are currently practising how to write a report properly together with the class. We learnt how to take keywords out of other texts, from books or out of the internet using this really amazing search engine called google. But in order to create an awesome animal report, we will need to plan our work wisely. Wish us good luck!

These trees can grow up to the size of this tree! Look at the size of this tree compared to the babies! We are all really excited to go and plant these trees. There are nearly a thousand trees that we have to plant!! We will be very busy.

In art we have been learning how to draw dragons and how to sketch them as well.
We have also been learning how to illustrate more detailed parts of the dragon. After we have learned to do that well we are going to draw a good copy of one of our dragons and Indian ink them. Here is an example.

TENNIS
Every Monday afternoon and Thursday morning Room 7MM are taking tennis lessons.
A trained professional called Vicki teaches us some tennis skills. This is part of our P.E programme for term 2. Room 7 finds tennis enjoyable and challenging at the same time. We look forward to seeing the improvement that spreads throughout our class.

In our class some of the people did some maths about how to use cm and mm.
First we learn cm. When its 2.8cm it is difficult to get answer with a ruler so we learnt about rounding to the nearest whole number to 2.8cm. So answer is 3cm because 2.8cm is nearest to 3cm.
Some of the people did a mm maths programme.
mm is little bit more difficult than cm because it is thinner to measure but we learnt about how to use mm. Now we are going to do a question. What is 2.6cm in mm? Easy! First we have to times 10 to move the decimal point to the right. So the answer is 26mm.

Tigers
For our reading we are reading about tigers. We chose a fact that we learnt and we chose what a tiger can grow up to. And it can grow up to 4 metres!!!!! What we had to do was chalk it on the concrete and compare it to something. We chose to compare it to us lying next to it and here are some photos of us.

Anzac Day is celebrated in 25th of April with poppies.
We celebrate Anzac Day to acknowledge the death of the soldiers.
People sell poppies to memorize the sacrifices of the soldiers.
Poppies are red flowers that celebrate the soldiers that sacrificed themselves at war.
The red poppy is linked to the battlefield deaths.
Here is a Anzac Day Poem:

Here is a Anzac Day Poem:
A Poem for Remembrance Day
"The inquisitive mind of a child"
Why are they selling poppies, Mummy?
Selling poppies in town today.
The
poppies, child, are flowers of love.
For the men who marched away.
But why have they chosen a poppy, Mummy?
Why not a beautiful
rose?
Because my child, men fought and died
In the fields where the
poppies grow.
But why are the poppies so red, Mummy?
Why are the poppies so red?
Red
is the colour of blood, my child.
The blood that our soldiers shed.
The heart of the poppy is black, Mummy.
Why does it have to be
black?
Black, my child, is the symbol of grief.
For the men who never
came back.
But why, Mummy are you crying so?
Your tears are giving you pain.
My
tears are my fears for you my child.
For the world is forgetting again.

Construction
Our school is constructing a new block because it is leaking and rotting because it was constructed wrong.
The building is going to be two stories high with two classrooms downstairs and and two classrooms up stairs.
Because of the construction the top playground is off limits :(
There is so much noise from the construction of the classes and there are a lot of trucks and cranes moving in. Posted by Connor and Sam

Camp Memories
After room 7, 5, and 12 came back from camp, room 7 and room 5 have been making spectacular thank you cards for the parents and teachers who came to camp with us. We also put some sentences to thank them for what they did for us at camp and we also drew a picture on each card. Once we had finished the picture we outlined it with Indian ink, coloured it and then we sent the cards to the parents and teachers. Here are some of the finished products!

This is a photo of the drain that had an octopus over the drain and because the building sight covered most of it, we need to repaint it. Hannah, Caitlin, Sophia and Jess and some more people are repainting the drains. We need to make our own design. On Thursdays we plan and paint the drains.

Cyber Safety
This morning Mrs Wansink came in to talk to us about cyber safety. We learnt about how someone could get bullied over the internet. Sometimes physical bullying starts cyber bullying. If we see someone being bullied or we are being bullied ourselves, we need to be part of the solution and not part of the problem. Telling an adult who we trust is one way to solve the bullying problem.
